The group stage of both the men’s and women’s soccer has completed, and we now know who will be progressing to the knockout stages this weekend.
The women’s event has been incredibly entertaining, and although the teams advancing to the quarters were as predicted, there were a few shocks during the group games which mean the order was not quite as everyone thought. The top two from each group, and then the two highest placed runners up also join in for the quarter finals. Great Britain beat high flying Brazil in their last game, therefore topping the group with Brazil in second. Sweden and Japan go through from their group, with USA and France also advancing. The two runners up were Canada and New Zealand – who meet GBR and USA respectively. The quarter final match ups look like this:
Great Britain v Canada – Britain should win this comfortably.
United States v New Zealand – More than likely an easy win for the USA.
Sweden v France – A tight call, but I think France have impressed enough to just about nick it.
Brazil v Japan – World Champions Japan can never be written off, but I think Brazil will win this game.
In the men’s event, Great Britain (with their first Olympic team to qualify or enter since 1960), Senegal Mexico, Korea, Brazil, Egypt, Japan and Honduras all have qualified for the quarter finals. The shock exits of Spain and Uruguay mean that this competition is wide open, however Brazil, having scored 9 goals in their 3 games look the favorite for the gold at the moment. The quarter finals shape up a little like this:
Great Britain v Korea – I think GBR will just about sneak through this one in a tight game.
Brazil v Honduras – Brazil should win this comfortably.
Mexico v Senegal – A close game to call, but it’s Mexico for me.
Japan v Egypt – I think although Japan will be favorites, Egypt may spring a surprise.
The women’s quarter finals all take place on August 3rd, and the men’s on August 4th. See if you can catch a couple of games and discover a showcase of all the young talent across the soccer globe.
