Player Spotlight: Landon Donovan

As an American, it is hard to talk to other Americans that think they know what they’re talking about when it comes to the beautiful game. This is especially true when they try to tell you that Landon Donovan is up there with the greatest players in the world based on his national team caps and goals, his performances in Major League Soccer and his brief stints at Everton in the English Premier League. Obviously, Donovan has done a great deal in helping America build a name in world football and he has helped the game’s popularity grow in the United States. So after having a discussion about Donovan one night (what a rousing party that was!), I decided to finally look into whether all the talk of Donovan in, mostly, American minds is realistic and my purpose of writing this article is to help you draw your own conclusion on Donovan’s place in world football. I’ll mostly look at his international record and his loan spells at Everton because his ability and statistics in Major League Soccer, while impressive in their own right, are not as significant in forming my personal conclusion of him, and rightfully so, as you will see.
